LGV (Cat.C+E) (Old HGV Class 1)

Maximum weight = 44 000 kg, can be exceeded subject to STGO (Special Type General Order)

[Cat.C must be held to obtain Cat C+E provisional entitlement]

[Cat.B (Car) must be held to obtain Cat C provisional entitlement]

LGV Maximum Weights (subject to axle configuration / spacing*).

2 axle rigid = 18 000 kg

3 axle artic./ rigid = 26 000 kg

4 axle rigid = 32 000 kg

4 axle rigid & trailer = 36 000 kg

4 axle artic. = 38 000 kg

5 axle artic. / rigid & trailer = 40 000 kg

6 axle artic. / rigid & trailer = 44 000 kg

STGO:

Cat.1, up to 50 tonnes (11.5 tonnes/axle)

Cat.2, up to 80 tonnes (12.5 tonnes/axle)

Cat.3, up to 150 tonnes (16.5tonnes/axle)

Vehicle Length.

Rigid vehicles = 39'4" (12m)

Articulated vehicles = 54' (16.5m)

Vehicle & trailer combinations = 61'6" (18.75m)

Articulated vehicles with lo-loader semi-trailer,manufactured after 1.4.1991 (not including step-frame low-loaders) = 59' (18m)

Car transporter semi-trailer: Kingpin to rear = 41' (12.5m)

Car transporter semi-trailer: Kingpin to any point at the front = 13'8" (4.19m)

Other semi-trailer: Kingpin to rear = 39'4" (12m)

Other semi-trailer: Kingpin to any point at the front = 6'7" (2.04m)

Composite trailer = 46' (14.04m)

Drawbar trailer with 4 or more wheels, and drawing vehicle is more than 3500kg MGW = 36'4" (12m)

Other drawbar trailers = 23' (7m)

Vehicle Height.

If your vehicle is over 9'10" (3m) display the height in your cab.

DRIVE TO THE SIGNS - DO NOT IGNORE THEM

Bridges with more than 16'3" (4.95m) safe headroom are not signed.

If your vehicle is under 16'3" you can safely drive under unsigned bridges.

If your vehicle is over 16'3" you do not know what bridges you can go under.

Special conditions apply if your load is:

- More than 9'6" (2.9m) wide

- Projects more than 12" (305mm) on either side

- Projects rearwards by more than 3'3" (1m)

- The vehicle, with its load, has a rigid length of more than 61'2" (18.65m)

If your vehicle is more than 8'4.5" (2.55m) wide or, together with its load either/&/or:

- exceeds the gross vehicle weight / gross train weight allowed by the

Construction & Use regulations for ordinary lorries

- the vehicle and load is more than 14'1" (4.3m) wide

Then you must comply with STGO requirements.

You must apply to DfT for permission to move if:

- The weight of the vehicle & load is more than 150 tonnes.

- The width of the vehicle is more than 16'5" (5m)

- The rigid length is more than 89'9" (27.4m)
